As we transition back to the colder months, it’s important to apply these tips for a healthy garden.
- Clean up the garden beds. Remove spent flowers and dead plants to keep diseases from overwintering in the soil.
- Divide and transplant perennials such as day lilies and Hosta. Replant them in well-prepared beds in the early fall to give them time to get established before a hard freeze.
- Plant fall blooming flowers like mums, ornamental kale, and chrysanthemums to add color and a festive note to your garden.
- Plant bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocuses for spring.
- Amend your soil with organic material, turn it over and aerate garden beds once they’ve been cleaned up.
- Any cold-sensitive plants that you may want to preserve such as Bromeliads (tropicals) need to come indoors.
